Biography

Karen Jo Koonan is one of the leading trial consultants specializing in criminal defense work. She has been with National Jury Project/West since 1987 where she advises attorneys on jury-related issues in a full range of criminal cases. She spends much of her time listening to and analyzing the experiences and attitudes of prospective jurors on issues related to crime, drugs, race and violence.Ms. Koonan was a national president of the National Lawyers Guild and is a former Board member of Women Defenders, a California organization of women criminal defense attorneys. She has published in professional journals and is a contributor to National Jury Project's volume Jurywork: Systematic Techniques, published by Clark Boardman Callaghan.In addition, Ms. Koonan has been a featured lecturer at law schools, bar associations, public organizations and community forums, including ones associated with the United States District Court, Northern District of California, the Institute for Criminal Defense Advocacy, San Diego, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, and the California State Bar.
