Biography

Dr. Weisheit is a Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice at Illinois State University, where he has been employed since August of 1982. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology in May of 1981 from Washington State University. His writings have focused on the drugs-crime connection, women and crime, and on the effectiveness of alcohol and drug education programs.Dr. Weisheit has served as series editor for the ACJS/Anderson Monograph series of books, Issues in Crime and Justice. He is currently on the editorial advisory board for the Garland Press book series in Criminal Justice, and has been on the editorial advisory board of three journals, as well as a manuscript reviewer for over half a dozen journals.Since 1994 Dr. Weisheit has worked with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia to develop a training program for rural drug enforcement. In 1996 he assisted FLETC in the development of a training program on community policing in rural and small-town America. In March of 1998, Dr. Weisheit appeared on in the Frontline documentary film series in a story about marijuana cultivation in the midwest. In January of 1996, Dr. Weisheit appeared on the news program 60 Minutes discussing domestic marijuana growers. His work has also been reported in a variety of magazines and newspapers, including The Atlantic Monthly, U.S. News & World Report, and U.S.A. Today. In addition, he has provided background information for dozens of articles and news programs.In 1995, Dr. Weisheit was appointed to serve on two task forces for the American Society of Criminology — The Task Force on Police, and The Task Force on Drugs. These task force reports were presented to the Attorney General of the United States.
