| Biography | Ricky N. Bluthenthal is an Associate Specialist at the Urban Health Study, Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. He is the Principal Investigator of a study examining HIV risk behaviors and infection among drug injectors, and the efficacy of syringe exchange programs in Oakland and Richmond, California. Mr. Bluthenthal is also a doctoral candidate in the Sociology Department at UC Berkeley. The working title of his dissertation is "Race, poverty, and disease: AIDS among African-American injection drug users in the San Francisco Bay area." Mr. Bluthenthal is a long time volunteer with the Alameda County needle exchange and serves on the boards of the Harm Reduction Coalition (HRC), and the HIV Education and Prevention Project of Alameda County (HEPPAC). He is also a member of the HRC sponsored Harm Reduction Working Group. He has been interviewed and/or quoted regarding drug use, HIV infection, syringe exchange, and harm reduction by the following media outlets: Bay Area Reporter, Channel 7/KGO News, Contra Costa Times, the East Bay Express, KPFA's "Flashpoints," National Public Radio's "Talk of the Nation," the Oakland Tribune, the Progressive, the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, San Jose Mercury News, and `Z' Magazine. |
